JIA stands for Juvenile idiopathic arthritis, a musculoskeletal & rheumatology abbreviation.

The most common chronic rheumatic disease of childhood, defined as arthritis of unknown cause starting before age 16 and lasting at least six weeks. Subtypes include oligoarticular, polyarticular, systemic, psoriatic and enthesitis-related forms.

Example: Oligoarticular JIA, ANA positive, age 4; ophthalmology slit-lamp screening every 3 months.

Usage notes

JIA replaced the older terms juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA, used in the US) and juvenile chronic arthritis (Europe) under the ILAR classification. Children with oligoarticular disease and a positive ANA are at high risk of silent uveitis, which can cause blindness unless detected by regular eye exams. Systemic JIA can trigger macrophage activation syndrome.
