IMN stands for Intramedullary nail, a musculoskeletal & rheumatology abbreviation.
Metal rod inserted into the hollow center of a long bone, typically the femur or tibia, to stabilize shaft fractures while allowing early movement and weight bearing. Screws at each end lock the nail to control rotation and length.
Example: Midshaft femur fracture; reamed antegrade IMN, weight bearing as tolerated post-op.
Usage notes
Often written "IM nail" or "IM rod". German surgeon Gerhard Küntscher popularized intramedullary nailing around 1940. Fat embolism syndrome is a recognized risk with long-bone fractures and reaming. Nails are also used prophylactically for bones weakened by cancer metastases.
