JCAHO stands for Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, a hospital abbreviation.
Former name of The Joint Commission, the US hospital accrediting body, still used informally by many clinicians, often pronounced "jay-co".
Example: Policy last revised to meet JCAHO standards on restraint documentation.
Usage notes
The organization adopted the name in 1987 and simplified its branding to The Joint Commission in 2007. Older policies, textbooks and job descriptions still refer to JCAHO. Hospitals may also be accredited by alternatives such as DNV or the Center for Improvement in Healthcare Quality.
