Usage notes
The phrase has roots in Black American slang and hip-hop; Pusha T's 2018 track "If You Know You Know" helped popularize it, and the abbreviation spread widely on Instagram and TikTok around 2019 and 2020. It can create a sense of belonging, or exclusion, depending on the reader. Fine in casual chat but unclear in professional writing.
