Insp. stands for Inspector, a title and honorific abbreviation.
Rank of inspector in British, Canadian, Australian and Indian police forces, and a title for officials who inspect buildings, food or schools. It appears before names in news reports and official correspondence.
Example: Insp. Gill told reporters that the coast road would remain closed overnight.
Usage notes
In UK policing, inspector ranks above sergeant and below chief inspector, and plainclothes inspectors are styled DI. Some US departments, including New York's, also use the rank. Fictional inspectors such as Lestrade in the Sherlock Holmes stories made the title familiar worldwide.
