ILA stands for International Longshoremen's Association, a professional association and labor union abbreviation.
Union of the dockworkers who load and unload cargo at ports on the US East and Gulf coasts, as well as in Puerto Rico and Eastern Canada.
Example: ILA members walked off the job at ports from Maine to Texas.
Usage notes
Founded in 1892, it bargains with port employers through the United States Maritime Alliance. In October 2024 it held a three-day strike, its first coastwide walkout since 1977, partly over automation, before agreeing to a new contract. West Coast dockworkers belong to the separate ILWU.
