Union of more than a million workers in freight, delivery, warehousing, airlines, public services and other industries in the United States and Canada, including drivers and package handlers at UPS.
Example: IBT members ratified a five-year contract covering 340,000 UPS workers.
Usage notes
Founded in 1903 by merging unions of team drivers who hauled goods by horse-drawn wagon. Former president Jimmy Hoffa disappeared in 1975, and federal oversight followed decades of organized crime influence. Members are usually called Teamsters, and the union is more often called the Teamsters than the IBT.
