IGBT stands for Insulated-gate bipolar transistor, an electronics & electrical abbreviation.
Power semiconductor combining a MOSFET-like insulated gate with bipolar-transistor conduction, able to switch hundreds to thousands of volts and amperes efficiently. IGBTs drive electric vehicle motors, trains, wind turbines, industrial motor drives, induction cooktops and solar inverters.
Example: The traction inverter uses six IGBT modules to convert battery DC into three-phase AC for the motor.
Usage notes
B. Jayant Baliga and others developed the IGBT in the early 1980s, notably at General Electric. Silicon carbide MOSFETs are replacing IGBTs in many EV inverters because they switch faster with lower losses. IGBT modules are rated by voltage classes such as 650 V and 1,200 V.
