ICV stands for Intracerebroventricular, a medication route abbreviation.
Route that delivers a drug directly into the fluid-filled ventricles of the brain, through an implanted reservoir such as an Ommaya device. It bypasses the blood-brain barrier for certain chemotherapy, antibiotics and enzyme-replacement therapies.
Example: Cerliponase alfa 300 mg ICV every other week via the reservoir.
Usage notes
Cerliponase alfa (Brineura), approved in 2017 for CLN2 Batten disease, is an enzyme replacement given by ICV infusion every two weeks. Strict aseptic technique is required because device infections can cause ventriculitis. ICV is closely related to the intrathecal route but reaches the brain's ventricles rather than the lumbar spinal canal.
