Hwy stands for Highway, an address abbreviation.
Major public road connecting towns and cities, from two-lane rural routes to divided multilane roads. In addresses it usually appears with a number, as in 2100 Hwy 101, identifying a business or farm along the route.
Example: The diner sits at 4420 Hwy 61, just past the county line.
Usage notes
The standard form HWY is also used by Canada Post, where Ontario's Hwy 401 is one of the busiest roads in North America. In US speech highway covers everything from interstates to country roads.
