HSG stands for Hysterosalpingogram, a medical imaging abbreviation.

Fluoroscopic X-ray in which contrast is injected through the cervix to outline the uterine cavity and show whether the fallopian tubes are open. It is a standard part of infertility evaluation and confirms tubal occlusion after some sterilization procedures.

Example: HSG: normal uterine cavity with free spill from both tubes.

Usage notes

Scheduled after menstrual bleeding stops and before ovulation so that an early pregnancy is not exposed. Cramping is common, and antibiotics may be given when there is a history of pelvic infection. Saline or foam sonohysterography can assess the cavity and tubes without radiation.
