HPLC stands for High-performance liquid chromatography, a chemistry abbreviation.

Analytical method that pumps a liquid sample at high pressure through a column packed with fine particles, separating its components by how strongly they interact with the packing. HPLC is the standard way pharmaceutical, food and environmental labs measure purity and concentration, typically with a UV or mass spectrometry detector.

Example: Purity by HPLC was 99.2% (area percent, detection at 254 nm).

Usage notes

The letters originally stood for high-pressure liquid chromatography; "performance" became the preferred word as column technology improved in the 1970s. Instruments working at even higher pressures with smaller particles are sold as UHPLC or UPLC. Reversed-phase HPLC, with a nonpolar C18 column and water-acetonitrile or water-methanol mobile phases, is the most common mode.
