HDPE stands for High-density polyethylene, a chemistry abbreviation.
Stiff, opaque polyethylene with little chain branching, used for milk jugs, detergent bottles, cutting boards, gas and water pipes and outdoor lumber. It resists most chemicals and is one of the most commonly recycled plastics.
Example: The new water main is 8-inch HDPE, fused at each joint instead of glued.
Usage notes
Karl Ziegler's catalysts, developed in 1953, made low-pressure HDPE production practical and earned him a share of the 1963 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Giulio Natta. HDPE carries resin code 2, and its density typically ranges from about 0.94 to 0.97 g/cm3. Pipes are joined by butt fusion, which heats the ends until they weld together.
