Heme/Onc stands for Hematology and oncology, a medical specialty abbreviation.
Combined subspecialty covering blood disorders (anemia, bleeding and clotting disorders, sickle cell disease) and cancers, including leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma as well as solid tumors. Most US physicians in this field complete a three-year combined fellowship after internal medicine residency.
Example: New pancytopenia with circulating blasts, so Heme/Onc was paged overnight.
Usage notes
Also written Hem/Onc or Heme-Onc. Benign or "classical" hematology, covering thrombosis and bleeding disorders, has become a recognized focus because many heme/onc physicians concentrate on cancer. Pediatric hematology-oncology is a separate fellowship. Large hospitals split inpatient services into leukemia, bone marrow transplant and solid tumor teams.
