HEIF stands for High Efficiency Image File Format, a file format abbreviation.

Container format standardized by the Moving Picture Experts Group in 2015 (ISO/IEC 23008-12) for storing images and image sequences, usually compressed with HEVC. It supports transparency, depth data, multiple images and 10-bit color.

Example: The camera can save HEIF files with 10-bit color for better HDR editing.

Usage notes

HEIF is the general container; HEIC files are HEIF with HEVC-coded images, and AVIF files are HEIF-style containers holding AV1-coded images. Canon, Sony and Fujifilm cameras offer HEIF as an alternative to JPEG. HEVC patent licensing has slowed adoption in browsers, most of which do not display HEIC images natively.
