H.264 stands for ITU-T H.264 video coding standard, a file format abbreviation.
Video compression standard, also called MPEG-4 AVC, that became the most widely used video codec in the world, used for Blu-ray discs, HD broadcasting, video calls, streaming and phone cameras. It offers good quality at low bit rates with universal hardware support.
Example: For maximum compatibility, export the video as H.264 with AAC audio in an MP4.
Usage notes
ITU-T's Video Coding Experts Group and ISO/IEC MPEG developed it jointly; the first version was approved in 2003. Patent licensing through a pool, now run by Via Licensing Alliance, applies to commercial encoders and decoders, so Cisco distributes the free OpenH264 codec for browsers. Its successor is H.265.
