1. Green New Deal
Government & Politics · Political Abbreviations
Congressional resolution and broader policy framework calling for rapid decarbonization of the US economy combined with job guarantees and social programs, named in reference to Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal.
Example: The candidate said she supports the goals of the GND but not its price tag.
The nonbinding resolution introduced in February 2019 by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Ed Markey did not pass. Similar ideas appear in party platforms in the UK and Canada, and the European Union adopted its own "European Green Deal" in 2019. Estimates of the cost of a full program vary enormously.
2. Ground
Science & Engineering · Electronics & Electrical Abbreviations
Reference point of zero volts in a circuit against which other voltages are measured, and the return path for current. In building wiring, ground also means the protective earth connection that carries fault current safely away and trips breakers.
Example: Connect the sensor's GND pin to the Arduino's GND before wiring the signal line.
Engineers distinguish earth ground, connected to a rod in the soil, from chassis ground and signal ground, which may float relative to earth. Ground loops between equipment can cause audible hum in audio systems. In US wiring, ground conductors are bare or green, while international practice uses green and yellow.
