1. General Electric
Organizations & Companies · Company and Brand Abbreviations
American industrial company that was for more than a century one of the world's largest conglomerates, making jet engines, power equipment, medical devices and appliances. After a three-way split, the company carrying the GE name is GE Aerospace, a jet-engine maker based near Cincinnati.
Example: GE Aerospace raised its forecast as demand for jet engine parts surged.
Formed in 1892 by the merger of Edison General Electric and Thomson-Houston. It was an original member of the Dow Jones Industrial Average in 1896 and was removed in 2018. GE HealthCare was spun off in 2023 and the energy business GE Vernova in 2024. GE Appliances has been owned by Haier since 2016.
2. Georgia
Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations
Georgia, the country in the South Caucasus, has Tbilisi as its capital and GEO as its alpha-3 code. It has nothing to do with the US state of Georgia, whose postal code is GA.
Example: Wine from GE is often fermented in buried clay vessels called qvevri.
Georgians call their country Sakartvelo, and the language code for Georgian is ka. Georgia has one of the oldest winemaking traditions in the world, dating back about 8,000 years.
3. Germanium (Ge)
Science & Engineering · Chemical Element Abbreviations
A grayish metalloid with atomic number 32, germanium was the semiconductor in the first transistor, built at Bell Labs in 1947, before silicon took over. Today it is used in fiber-optic cables, infrared camera lenses and night-vision optics, and in silicon-germanium chips for high-speed electronics.
Example: The thermal camera's lens is ground from Ge, which is opaque to visible light but transmits infrared.
Clemens Winkler discovered germanium in 1886 in the silver mineral argyrodite and named it after Germany. It closely matched the eka-silicon predicted by Mendeleev in 1871, including its density and atomic weight, strengthening acceptance of the periodic table. Claims that germanium supplements improve health are unsupported, and some products have caused kidney damage.
4. General education
Education & Academia · Academic Abbreviations
Set of required breadth courses, in subjects such as writing, mathematics, sciences, arts and social sciences, that all undergraduates must complete regardless of major. In California the abbreviation is standard in community college and university transfer planning.
Example: She finished all her GE courses at community college before transferring as a junior.
Also called "gen ed", core curriculum or distribution requirements. California replaced the IGETC and CSU GE Breadth patterns with a single transfer pattern, Cal-GETC, beginning in fall 2025. Columbia's Core Curriculum is a famous example of a highly structured GE program.
