GABA stands for Gamma-aminobutyric acid, a biology abbreviation.
Chief inhibitory neurotransmitter of the mammalian brain, which dampens nerve activity by opening chloride channels on neurons. Many sedatives act on GABA receptors, including benzodiazepines, barbiturates, alcohol and the anesthetic propofol.
Example: Benzodiazepines enhance the effect of GABA at the GABA-A receptor, producing calm and drowsiness.
Usage notes
GABA was identified in the brain in 1950. In plants and bacteria it plays roles in stress responses and metabolism. Supplements labeled GABA are widely sold, but evidence that oral GABA crosses the blood-brain barrier in meaningful amounts is limited. Pronounced "GAB-a."
