FITC stands for Fluorescein isothiocyanate, a biology abbreviation.
Green fluorescent dye that attaches to proteins through their amino groups, long the most common label for antibodies in immunofluorescence and flow cytometry. It is excited by blue light around 495 nanometers and emits near 520 nanometers.
Example: Anti-CD4 antibodies conjugated to FITC were used to identify helper T cells.
Usage notes
FITC fades relatively quickly under illumination and its fluorescence depends on pH, so brighter, more stable dyes such as Alexa Fluor 488 have replaced it in many applications. The "FITC channel" on flow cytometers still names the green detection channel.
