CategoriesBusiness & Finance

G&A stands for General and administrative expenses, an accounting abbreviation.

Overhead costs of running a business that are not directly related to producing or selling products, such as executive pay, finance, legal, HR, office rent, insurance and IT. G&A is often reported as part of SG&A.

Example: G&A grew only 3 percent while revenue rose 25 percent, widening the operating margin.

Usage notes

Software and biotech companies often break out G&A separately from sales and marketing and from R&D. In private equity, G&A savings from merging back offices are a common source of deal synergies. How to allocate G&A to business units is a perennial debate in management accounting.
