FRAX stands for Fracture Risk Assessment Tool, a musculoskeletal & rheumatology abbreviation.

Online calculator that estimates a person's 10-year probability of a major osteoporotic fracture and of hip fracture from age, sex, weight, height, prior fracture, family history, smoking, steroid use, rheumatoid arthritis, alcohol and optional bone density. It guides decisions about osteoporosis treatment.

Example: FRAX 10-year hip fracture risk 3.4 percent with osteopenia; start alendronate.

Usage notes

Developed at the University of Sheffield by John Kanis's group and released in 2008, it uses country-specific models. US guidance has treated a 10-year risk of at least 20 percent for major fracture or 3 percent for hip fracture as a threshold for therapy. It does not account for falls or the number of prior fractures. Pronounced "fracks".
