FCAW stands for Flux-cored arc welding, an engineering abbreviation.
Semi-automatic welding process similar to MIG but using a tubular wire filled with flux, which produces shielding gas and slag. Self-shielded flux-cored wire needs no gas bottle, making it suitable for outdoor structural steel and shipbuilding.
Example: Ironworkers used self-shielded FCAW to weld the beam connections in the windy conditions.
Usage notes
Gas-shielded FCAW (FCAW-G) gives high deposition rates for thick sections, while self-shielded FCAW (FCAW-S) tolerates wind. Like stick welding, it leaves slag that must be removed. Flux-cored wire is also popular with hobbyists using inexpensive gasless welders.
