Acronym for five large, popular US technology stocks: Facebook (now Meta Platforms), Apple, Amazon, Netflix and Google (now Alphabet). It serves as shorthand for big tech's outsized influence on stock market indices.
Example: FAANG stocks accounted for most of the index's gains during the first half of the year.
Usage notes
CNBC's Jim Cramer popularized "FANG" in 2013, and Apple was later added to make FAANG. After Facebook's renaming in 2021, alternatives appeared, and from 2023 the "Magnificent Seven" (adding Microsoft, Nvidia and Tesla and dropping Netflix) became the more common label. Pronounced "fang."
