CategoriesScience & Engineering

dNTP stands for Deoxynucleoside triphosphate, a biology abbreviation.

Collective name for the four DNA building blocks, dATP, dCTP, dGTP and dTTP, which DNA polymerases join together when copying DNA. dNTP mixes are a standard component of PCR and sequencing reactions.

Example: Add 1 microliter of 10 mM dNTP mix to each 50-microliter reaction.

Usage notes

The N stands for any of the four nucleotides. Chain-terminating versions, ddNTPs, lack the 3' hydroxyl group needed to continue the chain and were the key to Frederick Sanger's 1977 sequencing method. Cells tightly regulate dNTP pools, and imbalances raise mutation rates.
