CHO stands for Chinese hamster ovary (cells), a biology abbreviation.
Cell line derived from the ovary of a Chinese hamster and the dominant platform for manufacturing biologic drugs. CHO cells grow in large bioreactors and attach human-compatible sugar chains to proteins, so most therapeutic monoclonal antibodies are produced in them.
Example: The biosimilar is expressed in CHO cells grown in 2,000-liter single-use bioreactors.
Usage notes
Theodore Puck established the CHO line in 1957 from a hamster brought out of China. The first recombinant drug made in CHO cells, tissue plasminogen activator (Activase), was approved in 1987. Their genome was sequenced in 2011, aiding further engineering.
