DDNS stands for Dynamic DNS, a networking abbreviation.

Automatically updates a DNS record whenever a network's public IP address changes, so a fixed hostname always points to a home or small-office connection even though the ISP reassigns its address. Routers, NAS boxes and security cameras often include a DDNS client.

Example: Set up DDNS on the router so the security cameras stay reachable after the ISP changes our address.

Usage notes

The standard mechanism for changing records programmatically, DNS UPDATE, is defined in RFC 2136 (1997), though consumer services usually rely on simple HTTP calls instead. DDNS cannot help behind carrier-grade NAT, because the public address is shared with other customers. Despite the similar letters, it has nothing to do with DDoS attacks.
