d.b.n. stands for De bonis non (of goods not administered), a Latin legal abbreviation.
Designation for a successor fiduciary appointed to finish administering an estate after the original executor or administrator dies, resigns or is removed. The administrator d.b.n. takes over whatever assets remain unadministered.
Example: After the executor's death, the grandson petitioned to be appointed administrator d.b.n. of the estate.
Usage notes
Short for "de bonis non administratis". When the estate has a will, the combined form "administrator d.b.n.c.t.a." is used. Like c.t.a., the label appears mainly in probate captions and court letters, and many states now say "successor personal representative" instead.
