DAL stands for Dallas Love Field, an airport code abbreviation.

Dallas's close-in airport, about 6 miles northwest of downtown, and the headquarters and birthplace of Southwest Airlines. Federal limits on long-haul service from the airport, the Wright Amendment, lasted from 1979 to 2014.

Example: DAL is twenty minutes from my office, so I'll always pick Southwest from Love Field over DFW.

Usage notes

ICAO code KDAL. Named for Moss Lee Love, an Army lieutenant killed in a 1913 crash. President Kennedy landed at Love Field on November 22, 1963, and Lyndon Johnson took the oath of office aboard Air Force One there hours later. The Wright Amendment protected the new DFW airport by restricting flights from Love Field.
