1. Donor-advised fund

Organizations & Companies · Nonprofit Abbreviations · also used in business

Charitable giving account held at a sponsoring nonprofit, such as a community foundation or a fund linked to an investment firm, into which donors contribute assets for an immediate tax deduction and later recommend grants to charities.

Example: She funded her DAF with appreciated stock and recommends grants every December.

Donor-advised funds have grown rapidly, and the charitable arms of investment companies now rank among the largest grantmakers in the country. Unlike private foundations, they have no required annual payout, which critics say allows money to sit without reaching charities. Donors advise, but the sponsor legally controls the funds.

2. Department of the Air Force

Military · Military Unit and Organization Abbreviations

Military department that contains both the US Air Force and the US Space Force, headed by the secretary of the Air Force. It organizes, trains and equips both services, which share many headquarters functions and personnel systems.

Example: DAF officials said the policy applies to both airmen and Guardians.

The department was created in 1947 along with the independent Air Force, and the Space Force joined it in December 2019, mirroring the way the Marine Corps sits within the Department of the Navy. DAF also appears in the names of department-level offices and instructions.

3. Van Doorne's Aanhangwagen Fabriek

Organizations & Companies · Company and Brand Abbreviations
