CategoriesMedical

CXR stands for Chest X-ray, a medical imaging abbreviation.

Radiograph of the chest showing the lungs, heart size, mediastinum, diaphragm, ribs and any lines or tubes. It is among the most common imaging tests worldwide, used for pneumonia, heart failure, pneumothorax, effusions and masses and for checking endotracheal tube and central line positions.

Example: CXR: new right lower lobe consolidation; starting antibiotics for CAP.

Usage notes

The standard study is a two-view PA and lateral, while bedside portable films are AP and magnify the heart. A two-view chest X-ray delivers about 0.1 mSv, roughly ten days of natural background radiation. Systematic reading follows mnemonics such as ABCDE (airway, breathing, cardiac, diaphragm, everything else).
