1. Certificate of insurance
Business & Finance · Insurance Abbreviations
One-page document issued by an insurance agent or insurer summarizing a policyholder's coverage, including insurers, policy numbers, dates and limits, used to prove insurance to clients, landlords, lenders and event venues.
Example: Send the property manager a COI before your crew starts work on Monday.
Most US certificates use the ACORD 25 form, which states that it is for information only and does not change the policy. Simply being named as a certificate holder gives no coverage rights; becoming an additional insured requires a policy endorsement. Requesting and tracking COIs from vendors is a routine risk management task.
2. Conflict of interest
Medical · Medical Research Abbreviations
Situation in which a researcher's or clinician's financial or personal interests, such as consulting fees, stock ownership or royalties, could compromise or appear to compromise professional judgment. Journals, institutions, guideline panels and funders require disclosure and management of COIs.
Example: COI disclosure: Dr. Patel has received consulting fees from the trial sponsor.
US payments from drug and device makers to physicians and teaching hospitals are published in the CMS Open Payments database under the Physician Payments Sunshine Act, with data public since 2014. Journals commonly use a standard disclosure form from the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors. Guideline groups increasingly limit panel members with relevant conflicts.
