CLR stands for Common Language Runtime, a programming abbreviation.

The virtual machine at the heart of Microsoft's .NET platform, which runs compiled intermediate-language code, manages memory with garbage collection and handles exceptions and security. C#, F# and Visual Basic .NET all run on it.

Example: The crash dump shows an unhandled exception inside the CLR's garbage collector.

Usage notes

Released with the .NET Framework in 2002 as Microsoft's counterpart to the Java Virtual Machine. Its standardized core is the Common Language Infrastructure (ECMA-335). The cross-platform runtime used by modern .NET, CoreCLR, was open-sourced in 2015.
