CFPB stands for Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, a US federal agency abbreviation.
Federal regulator for consumer financial products such as mortgages, credit cards, student loans, payday loans and debt collection. Funded through the Federal Reserve rather than annual appropriations, it writes and enforces consumer finance rules and handles complaints from the public.
Example: After the bank ignored her disputes, she submitted a complaint to the CFPB online.
Usage notes
The Dodd-Frank Act of 2010 created it, and it opened in July 2011, based on a proposal by then-professor Elizabeth Warren. The Supreme Court upheld its funding structure in 2024. In 2025 the administration moved to sharply reduce its staff and activities, prompting lawsuits over whether it could effectively be shut down.
