BRS stands for Blended Retirement System, a veteran abbreviation.
Military retirement system that took effect on January 1, 2018, combining a smaller defined-benefit pension with government contributions to the Thrift Savings Plan and a mid-career continuation pay bonus.
Example: Under the BRS, even members who leave before 20 years keep their TSP matching funds.
Usage notes
The pension multiplier under BRS is 2 percent per year of service, compared with 2.5 percent under the legacy High-3 system. Members with fewer than 12 years of service at the end of 2017 could opt in during 2018. Most new members are enrolled automatically.
