BPR stands for Business process reengineering, a management & strategy abbreviation.
Management approach that radically redesigns core business processes, rather than improving them incrementally, to achieve dramatic gains in cost, quality, speed or service. BPR projects often combine new IT systems with eliminating steps, handoffs and approvals.
Example: After BPR, the insurer's claims process dropped from 14 handoffs to three and payout time fell from weeks to days.
Usage notes
Michael Hammer's 1990 Harvard Business Review article "Reengineering Work: Don't Automate, Obliterate" and his 1993 book with James Champy, Reengineering the Corporation, launched the movement. Reengineering later became associated with layoffs and the term fell out of favor, though its ideas live on in process improvement and digital transformation.
