BNPL stands for Buy now, pay later, an e-commerce & retail abbreviation.
Short-term financing offered at checkout that splits a purchase into installments, commonly four payments over six weeks with no interest if paid on time, provided by companies such as Klarna, Afterpay and Affirm. Merchants pay a fee in return for higher conversion and order values.
Example: At checkout, choose BNPL to pay $50 today and three more payments every two weeks.
Usage notes
Klarna was founded in Sweden in 2005, and the model boomed in the late 2010s with online shopping. Regulators have raised concerns about consumers stacking several plans and about limited credit reporting; in the US, a 2024 Consumer Financial Protection Bureau rule treating BNPL like credit cards was withdrawn in 2025. Late fees and missed payments can still damage credit and finances.
