ASIO stands for Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, a world government abbreviation.
Australia's domestic security intelligence agency, which investigates espionage, foreign interference, terrorism and politically motivated violence. It is headquartered in Canberra and led by a Director-General.

Usage notes
Established in 1949, partly in response to Soviet espionage in Australia. It is roughly equivalent to the UK's MI5 and has no general power of arrest. Its heads have recently given public annual threat assessments naming foreign interference as a leading concern.
