AMBER stands for America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response, an emergency services abbreviation.
Child abduction alert system that broadcasts information about abducted children through radio, TV, highway signs and mobile phones to enlist the public's help. An AMBER Alert is issued when law enforcement believes a child is in imminent danger.
Example: An AMBER Alert lit up phones across the state for a 4-year-old taken from a park.
Usage notes
Named after Amber Hagerman, a 9-year-old abducted and murdered in Arlington, Texas, in 1996; the expansion is a backronym. The US Department of Justice says the program has helped recover more than 1,000 children. Criteria vary by state but generally require a confirmed abduction and enough descriptive information. Many other countries have adopted similar systems.
