AHJ stands for Authority having jurisdiction, an emergency services abbreviation.
Organization or official responsible for enforcing codes and approving equipment, installations or procedures, such as a fire marshal, building official or fire chief. The term is used throughout NFPA codes.
Example: Check with the AHJ before installing the new sprinkler system; they have final say on the plans.
Usage notes
NFPA codes deliberately leave many decisions to the AHJ, so requirements can differ from town to town. The AHJ may be a federal, state or local agency, or even an insurance company in some contexts. Disputes over code interpretation are resolved by the AHJ or an appeals board.
