CategoriesUnits & Measurements

AIC stands for Akaike information criterion, a statistics abbreviation.

A model-selection score that balances goodness of fit against complexity: AIC = 2k − 2 ln(L), where k is the number of parameters and L the maximized likelihood. Lower AIC indicates a better trade-off.

Example: The model with seasonality had the lowest AIC (412.3 vs 430.8), so it was retained.

Usage notes

Japanese statistician Hirotugu Akaike developed it in the early 1970s. Only differences in AIC between models fitted to the same data matter, and a difference of more than about 2 is often treated as meaningful. The corrected version AICc is preferred for small samples.
