Usage notes
The best-documented origin is a group of San Rafael, California, high school students known as the Waldos, who in 1971 met at 4:20 p.m. to search for a rumored abandoned cannabis crop; Grateful Dead fan circles then spread the phrase. Stories that it is a police radio code are myths. Keep it out of work and school messages.
