W.D. Tex. stands for United States District Court for the Western District of Texas, a court abbreviation.

Federal district stretching across central and west Texas, with divisions in Austin, San Antonio, El Paso, Midland, Del Rio and Waco. After Judge Alan Albright took the bench in 2018, the single-judge Waco division briefly drew more new patent suits than any other court in the country.

Example: The patent owner filed in W.D. Tex. hoping its case would land in the Waco division.

Usage notes

In July 2022 the district's chief judge ordered that new patent cases filed in Waco be randomly assigned among the district's judges, which sharply reduced filings there. Its border divisions also carry some of the heaviest immigration and drug-smuggling caseloads in the federal system. Non-patent appeals go to the Fifth Circuit.
