CategoriesTransportation & Travel

Vy stands for Best rate of climb speed, an aviation abbreviation.

Airspeed giving the greatest altitude gain per unit of time, used for normal climbs once obstacles are cleared. A Cessna 172's Vy is about 74 to 79 knots, depending on model.

Example: Positive rate, pitch for Vy and climb to 3,000 feet on runway heading.

Usage notes

Engines cool better at Vy than at Vx because of the higher airflow. Many pilots use a faster "cruise climb" for visibility over the nose and cooling. In twin-engine airplanes, Vyse, the best single-engine rate of climb, is marked by a blue line on the airspeed indicator.
