VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol, a telecom abbreviation.
Technology for making phone calls over the internet or private IP networks instead of traditional phone lines, used by apps such as WhatsApp and Teams, business phone systems and home phone services from broadband providers.
Example: We switched the office to VoIP and kept our old numbers.
Usage notes
VocalTec released one of the first consumer internet phone programs in 1995, and Skype (2003) brought free calling to millions. Business VoIP uses the SIP protocol and codecs such as G.711 and Opus. Call quality depends on latency, jitter and packet loss rather than raw bandwidth. VoIP services must provide location information for emergency calls, which differs from traditional landlines.
