UNSC stands for United Nations Security Council, an international organization abbreviation.

UN organ with primary responsibility for international peace and security, whose resolutions under Chapter VII of the Charter are binding on all members. It has five permanent members with veto power, China, France, Russia, the UK and the US, and 10 elected members.

Example: Russia vetoed the UNSC draft resolution, blocking its adoption.

Usage notes

Resolutions need nine votes and no veto from a permanent member. Elected members serve two-year terms, with five replaced each year. The council can authorize sanctions, peacekeeping missions and the use of force. Proposals to expand the permanent membership, for countries such as India, Brazil, Germany and Japan, have stalled for decades.
