TMI stands for Too much information, a texting and chat abbreviation.

Protests that someone has shared more personal detail than the listener wanted, typically about bodily functions, romance or medical issues. Also used preemptively, as in "sorry if tmi."

Example: Tmi, I did not need to know about your foot fungus at lunch.

Usage notes

Spread in American slang in the 1990s and is now used in speech as well as writing. Writers often warn "tmi but..." before oversharing. Generally lighthearted, and acceptable in casual work chat when used jokingly.
