SDH stands for Subdural hematoma, a neurology abbreviation.

Collection of blood between the dura and the brain's arachnoid layer, usually from tearing of bridging veins after head injury. It appears crescent-shaped on CT and is especially common in older adults, people on blood thinners and heavy drinkers, sometimes after minor falls.

Example: Two weeks of confusion after a fall; CT shows a right chronic SDH with 8 mm midline shift.

Usage notes

Acute SDH after severe trauma often needs emergency craniotomy, while chronic SDH, which develops over weeks as the brain shrinks with age, is commonly drained through burr holes. Trials published in 2024 showed that embolizing the middle meningeal artery reduces recurrence after chronic SDH. Brain atrophy stretches bridging veins, explaining the higher risk in older people.
