REPL stands for Read-eval-print loop, a programming abbreviation.
An interactive programming shell that reads an expression typed by the user, evaluates it, prints the result and waits for the next input. Python, Node.js, Ruby and Lisp all provide REPLs for quick experiments and debugging.
Example: Paste the snippet into the Python REPL to check what the regex actually matches.
Usage notes
The concept and name come from Lisp, where the loop can be written with the functions read, eval and print. Jupyter notebooks and browser developer consoles extend the idea with richer output. The online coding platform Replit took its name from the term.
