reh'g stands for Rehearing, a legal citation abbreviation.
Citation abbreviation in phrases such as "reh'g denied" and "reh'g en banc granted", showing that a court was asked to reconsider its own decision. Rehearing en banc means review by the full court of appeals, or a large panel, after a three-judge panel has ruled.
Example: Doe v. Roe, 60 F.4th 1 (9th Cir. 2023), reh'g en banc granted, 70 F.4th 500 (9th Cir. 2023).
Usage notes
When rehearing en banc is granted, the panel opinion is usually vacated and loses precedential force, so citing it without that history is misleading. Bluebook practice omits denials of rehearing unless they are particularly relevant. Federal petitions for panel or en banc rehearing are now governed by a consolidated Fed. R. App. P. 40.
